I’ll admit that I’m an extreme latecomer to the whole “sock-bun” trend (partially because I just couldn’t fathom the thought of a sock sitting on my head all day). However, when I finally decided to give it a try, I opted for the bun ring, and immediately became hooked. But now that everyone and their mother is sporting the “sock-bun,” I thought I would give a short tutorial on how to rock the braided bun look.
What you’ll need:
1. 2 hair ties
2. 3-4 bobby pins
3. A bun ring
4. Hair spray
5. An old toothbrush (I’ll explain shortly!)
Steps:
1. Begin by pulling your hair into a high pony tail. Make sure to brush all your hair into the pony tail so that there are no bumps/loose hairs.
2. Once your hair is in a pony tail, pull it through the bun ring so the ring is sitting at the base of your pony tail (where the hair tie is).
3. Tilt your head forward so your pony tail falls over your head and spread out your hair evenly so it covers the bun ring completely.
4. Once the hair is covering the bun ring, put a hair tie over the bun ring one time, making a bun in your hair. The remainder of your hair will be coming out the sides.
5. If you have long hair like me, there will be a significant amount of remaining hair coming out of the sides of the bun. Braid two sections of this hair and wrap it around the bun. Bobby pin the end of the braids under your bun so they are not visible.
6. To complete this look, hairspray your head and use an old toothbrush to brush the hair into the bun. This will get rid of flyaway hairs and just create a more sleek and clean look.
So after writing out these steps, I realized they might be a tad hard to follow so if you’re really unsure of how to perfect the braided bun, just search it in YouTube, there are a bunch of tutorials that will be more helpful if you learn better by watching.
What do you think of the braided “sock-bun” look? Do you prefer it without the braid? Let me know how you customize your sock-buns in the comments below! xoxo
I’m curious to find out what blog system you have been working with?
I’m experiencing some small security issues with my latest blog and I’d like to find something
more risk-free. Do you have any suggestions?
Not a fan of the sock bun at all! But this is actually a cute take. I usually do just a messy bun, or a braided bun. I actually find ballerina buns a ton easier than sock buns, but maybe its because I’m a dancer haha 😉

I too am a late comer to this look and have zero patience for doing my hair beyond blowdrying it. Heck, I recently became a fan of paying attention to my hair! I love the addition of the braid. So ballerina.
i love this! And the braid is a nice twist to the classic sock bun!! I cant wait for my hair to grow so I can do it lol!! Great post 🙂
Thank you, lovey ^__^
firstly, thank you for creating such an easy to do tutorial! my friend taught me to have the bun at the tips of my hair, rather than where the hair tie is, and its always a nightmare! this is so much easier! gonna try the braided bun too x
No problem, dear! And I heard about that way as well and thought it seemed too difficult! This way is so easy & takes much less time =)
